Need to check your blood sugar without the prick? There’s an app for that.

Science fiction takes another step towards science fact, as researches at the Northeastern University have developed a new way to measure blood levels with an iPhone. Some nanotechnology injection required.

It begins with the subject being injected with a small amount of “nanoparticle solution” says Professor Clark at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The nanoparticles will glow when exposed to molecules like glucose. Then a modified iPhone is then used to measure blood using “non-invasively monitor biomarkers.”

The modified iPhone uses a special equipment (special battery-powered case. camera lens filter, and LED array) to read the levels of fluorescence and sends the results to a computer.

The article also mentions that the device could be used for more than diabetes. There’s also an app called Skin Scan, which will detect melanoma by taking pictures of suspicious spots.
